LCCC alumna gives back to the community through education

An LCCC alumna is putting her degree to work as a special education teacher at Peters Elementary in the Northern Lehigh School District.
Melissa Bowers, 46, is an LCCC graduate with a degree in education.
“I initially chose LCCC for its convenience and affordability,” she said.
She came to LCCC as an adult, juggling multiple jobs, but kept going because of her love for children. LCCC helped turn her passion into a strong foundation for her teaching career.
“LCCC classes laid the groundwork for the commitment and dedication required of a teacher,” Bowers said.
She also recalled the professors who left a lasting impression on her.
“My physics teacher, to this day, remains strong in my mind and heart,” Bowers said. “He was the only science teacher who was ever able to teach me any lasting concepts in science class. He was incredibly patient, kind, and understanding. He made learning fun and relevant to our lives.”
She has carried that patience and compassion for students into her teaching career. She believes that everyone, regardless of who they are or what challenges they may face, deserves a chance—a principle she carries into her profession.
Bowers loves what she does and feels that there isn’t a more rewarding career.
“LCCC was absolutely the foundation for a successful teaching career. It taught me to work hard and be committed to my goals, no matter how big or small,” she said.
LCCC stories like hers are inspirational to others, including her daughter and current LCCC student, Stella Bowers, 18.
“Seeing where she went in her life after is inspiring and makes me feel confident in my future,” Stella Bowers said.
There’s one thing Bowers would like current LCCC students to know:
“You can't go wrong getting an education at LCCC, as the investment in your future is so worth it.”
