It’s no secret that Taylor Swift has taken the world by storm with her musical career. In fact, schools like Harvard and New York University are creating courses to study her business and entrepreneurship skills.

That being said, there are not many existing courses designed to study her lyricism, which is exactly why Dr. Melanie Turrano, LCCC Professor of English, has decided to launch Intro to Literature (Taylor’s Version).

“So many works have inspired [Taylor Swift] throughout her career,” said Turrano. “So we will be looking at a lot of those works and taking a look at how they are used in her world.”

Turrano says that she was drawn to teaching this course due to her newfound love for Taylor Swift within the past few years.

“I've taken a major independent study of Taylor Swift. So, I'm hoping to be able to use it to interact with students” said Turrano.

While this is first and foremost an English course that will be focusing on traditional pieces of literature, Turrano intends to incorporate Taylor Swift as often as possible. She has many fun activities planned including filming reaction videos and making friendship bracelets in order to pay tribute to Swift and her career.

Turrano’s lesson plans demonstrate how this new course allows students to take initiative in personalizing their education to their unique interests.

Dual-enrollment student Vera Hartsell expresses her excitement for the new course.

“I feel like it’s hard for people to strive in classes that they don’t care about or can’t connect with, so I’m excited to see a class that really tailors to the students and their interests outside of school,” she said.

Registration is open for Intro to Literature (Taylor’s Version) and students can choose if they’d like to take it in person at LCCC’s Morgan Center or remotely through zoom.

More information regarding the course can be found in the LCCC Student Newsletter or by contacting Dr. Turrano at mturrano@lccc.edu.
