Most LCCC students know some majors require a physical education class, but did you know that LCCC offers a variety of courses to match the diversity of its students? Dr. Joseph Flaherty, from the department of physical education, is ‘serving up’ a beginner and intermediate tennis class.

“Two sections for tennis are scheduled to run in the spring–Ped 117 tennis, this class is for beginners, and the people in class now can come back and sign up for Ped 118, intermediate tennis,” Dr. Flaherty says.

In the past, the course didn’t have enough students enrolled to run, but now students are taking advantage of the course this fall and the following spring semester. Students can start scheduling their next semester classes after September 23, and Flaherty wants interested students to keep tennis in mind.

But don’t just take it from Dr. Flaherty.

“Tennis is an interactive class, in a positive environment, with a fun and engaging teacher,” says Michelle Perreaus, a general studies major and an active participant.

Furthermore, tennis is an amazing workout for the cardiovascular system, especially in the heat. Some key highlights of the class are learning how to do a flat serve correctly, how to block, what the lines of the court signify, and how to play an official game of tennis.

With participants ranging from experienced players to beginners, this class allows LCCC students to learn the basics and unlock exciting opportunities in tennis. Yet, even if students don’t foresee a future playing tennis, this class still has so much to offer.

“Tennis is the best part of the day, getting to stretch your legs in a fun environment,” said Molly Williams, a general studies major.

Williams and Perreaus are not the only students to feel this way. In fact, when asked if they would recommend the class, most students gave an enthusiastic, “Absolutely!”

These new tennis courses LCCC is ‘serving up’ not only encourage physical activity, but also foster a love for the game.
