Most movie-goers would agree that the theatre you go to can make or break the experience you have. Within the Lehigh Valley, there are a variety of movie theaters–but nothing compares to the nostalgia of a drive-in movie. Shankweiler’s Drive-in, located on route 309 in Schnecksville, is the second drive-in theater ever built and holds the title for the oldest one still in operation.

What makes drive-in theaters unique is that you can decide your experience. Drive-in theaters have much more freedom than your everyday indoor theater.

“You can have the experience you want to have that can be as social and engaging as you want,” said Matt McClanahan, one of the owners of Shankweiler’s Drive-In Movie Theater.

Kylie Nagle, a part of Shankweiler’s Snack Bar Crew, has a similar experience.

“We are open year-round. In the winter, you can enjoy a movie in the snow, and in the summer, enjoy a movie sitting around with friends and family on lawn chairs or in the back of your vehicle, creating many long-lasting memories,” said Nagle.

Shankweiler's has many different specials and annual screenings. In early November, they screen all of the Twilight movies. Shankweiler's popular annual screening is their double feature of “The Thing” and “The Shining”. They increase the tension by playing it during the coldest weekend of the year.

An unforgettable thrill, McClanahan says, “It’s the true 1940s experience in a frozen drive-in lot, sometimes even in the snow.”

As of April 8, Shankweiler’s will have Retro Tuesdays. The first showing for Retro Tuesdays is Harriet the Spy. New upcoming showings and movies are also posted on their website.

You can find them on nearly all social media platforms, including Facebook (@Shankweiler’s Drive-In Theatre), Instagram (@shankweilers), and even TikTok (@shankweilers). To learn more about them, check out their website at Shankweilers.com
