The Impact of Angel Studios’ “Sounds of Freedom”

Alex Perez | Editor

When done right, movies tend to leave an impact on their viewers, whether that be positive or negative. They have the power to tell stories, to change narratives, and even to challenge the perspective of what we once knew.

The film, “Sounds of Freedom,” was that for me. For those of you who haven’t had the chance to watch this movie, I’ll give you a little rundown of what it’s about. The movie is based on the true story of a government agent named Tim who embarks on dangerous missions to save as many children as he can from child trafficking.

This movie took five years to see the light of day, due to it being shelved in 2018 when Walt Disney bought 20th Century Fox (where the movie was supposed to be released). Due to this, the movie stayed in limbo for years, until the filmmakers were able to acquire the rights to their movie and release it through Angel Studios.

This film carries a heaviness within it that, in hindsight, makes it hard to watch if you don’t prepare yourself enough. Though most things shown were implied, some scenes contained real footage of tragic events, and when they came on the screen I could hear cries and gasps all around me–including my own.

“Sounds of Freedom” is a story that needs to be told, and it needs to be heard. So if you’re up for it, go to your nearest movie theater and prepare some tissues. You’ll need them.
