Xanadu Open Mic: Scary Story Swap
Kaley Martin | Writer
Have you ever encountered a ghost? Have a spooky tale to tell? Recently, Xanadu held a Scary Story Swap Open Mic, where the bravest souls gathered to share their haunting encounters along with other artwork, stories, and poems.
The event was held in the Academic Resource Center from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 23.
Snacks and beverages were provided, along with games and coloring books. A guitar was made available, and students took the opportunity to play various melodies, allowing everyone to appreciate the different talents filling the room.
Alex Blasko and Jada Budhoo, members of Xanadu, were the emcees for this event. Anne Ryan, associate professor of English and advisor for Xanadu, complimented the two emcees for their brilliance.
“Not only did they dress the part in Halloween costumes, they created a warm and imaginative atmosphere for everyone to write, share, and make art,” Ryan said.
Fred Colevecchio, Haily Hottenstein, and Camden Alford were three of the many students who shared their horror-inspired artwork.
Haily Hottenstein, a social media ambassador for the J.E.D.I. Center, attended the Open Mic and shared two art pieces and one poem.
“One of my favorite things to do is to talk about my art and the details because there are so many details,” Hottenstein said.
When the bustle of people coming and going finally slowed, the remaining students played an old French game called Exquisite Corpse. Each person started with a piece of paper and wrote a story line to begin the game. The papers were passed around with each student adding another line until the page was full. Everyone stood up and read their new stories one by one while trying not to laugh.
“My favorite part of Open Mic is when students praise each other for their incredible stories, poems, and artwork,” Ryan stated.
Xanadu will be hosting more events in the coming months. Make sure you don’t miss out on the next one!
