Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the prestigious honor society for high performing two-year college students, offers a treasure trove of opportunities. Beyond academic recognition, membership gives students access to exclusive benefits as well as a solid sense of community.
PTK values students who excel academically. Members qualify by having a GPA of 3.5 or greater and completing at least 12 credit hours. Millions of dollars available in partner transfer scholarships, professional growth opportunities, and the ability to serve your community are just a few of many benefits the nonprofit offers.
“It's a continuum,” said Gene Eden, advisor for the Phi Theta Kappa chapter at LCCC. “There's plenty of opportunities for leadership development–things that should be part of the college experience.”
For prospective members who may be hesitant of joining the chapter, Eden’s message is, “Think of it as a moment to honor yourself and all the work you’ve done.”
Beyond financial and professional benefits, LCCC’s PTK chapter has cultivated a tight-knit group. Its members are inspired to connect and collaborate which is subsequently reflected in the college’s growing community.
“My husband became a member first, then I started after hearing about the scholarships and benefits,” said Allysa Lawson, a returning member of the chapter. In regards to the most rewarding aspect of her time there, Lawson says, “Community–kinda breaking out of my little introvert shell.”
Chapter meetings are held every Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in the Student Union meeting room as well as on Zoom. Prospective members are welcome and encouraged to stop by.
